WKA in Canada: A New Beginning
The WKA Canada National Team has been traveling to the World Kickboxing Association Annual World Championship every year since the mid 1990’s with teams ranging in size from a dozen competitors up to a high of over 300 for the 2005 championships held in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Canadian Team has an excellent track record of producing many WKA world champions over the years. Their victories have helped these competitors gain valuable life experience and confidence which they have gone on to apply to their other fields of interest.
For a number of years over the past decade, the Canadian WKA Team was the #1 medal-winning team at the World Championships...but unfortunately the medal haul has dropped the past few years. However, times are changing for WKA Canada! In 2009, the WKA world governing body appointed Ben Stewart as the new president of WKA Canada. Along with karate legend and newly minted WKA Canada vice president, Steve “Nasty” Anderson, Mr. Stewart has been going full out to kick-start WKA Canada in the right direction once again. Competitors, coaches and clubs will be very excited to see the investments that have been made to raise the bar for competitive sport martial arts in Canada including a fully-functional website, brand new 30’ x 30’ mats for all rings, digital scoreboards and timers, referee certification courses and, for the first time, a Canada-wide WKA competition circuit. We are confident that the future is bright for sport martial arts in Canada and for the thousands of Canadian competitors who support the WKA movement.
We wish everyone all the best in their training and look forward to seeing their future success with the WKA!
